The LiMA kit can be used for the detection of bacterial contamination. The LiMA kit tests for an enzyme; NAD dependent DNA ligase which is present in all bacteria tested to date. As such, this assay is especially useful for the detection of general bacterial contamination.

Tools for the sensitive and generic detection of bacteria
Due to the dual amplification cascades, of ligase then of PCR, the LiMA assay is very sensitive and can detect a single bacilli or fraction of the contents of a bacilli. For example, in platelet contamination testing the assay can detect as few as 10 bacilli present in 10 ml platelets.
